WordCamp 2013

Unbelievably, I have never been to WordCamp before even though I have been building WordPress sites since 2006. I suppose this has something to do with my dislike of developer conferences. I’m introverted around strangers, especially in crowds, so for me it’s just a long day surrounded by people who I’m not talking to. I just feel awkward.

I arrived this morning at WordCamp late, because the Muni T line seemed to be testing how slowly it could transport people before they start rioting. I could have easily walked faster than the train and considered doing just that, but kept having this useless optimism that it would start going at a normal speed. Everyone else aboard seemed non-plussed, so maybe I’ve just gotten out of practice with the metro since I don’t live or work in SF anymore.

Then when I got there I had to go to three different people to try to get my badge, and my blood sugar was low, and I thought wow, this is sucking more than my usual conference experience.

I finally was set, grabbed some tea, and headed over to the Happiness Bar for my volunteer shift. I was a little worried about this particular bit of volunteering; I thought folks would ask me tricky coding questions and I’d get tripped up because I couldn’t recite the correct function names. Or something equally esoteric and geeked out.

Instead, I got a series of interesting questions which were all fairly easy for me to answer. The people asking the questions were really perplexed by their question, and were so relieved when I could just answer it off the top of my head.

You know what? I had fun.
